Descripción

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) developed the Clean California Local Grant Program as part of a two-year program through which approximately $296 million in funds will go to local communities to beautify and improve local streets and roads, tribal lands, parks, pathways, and transit centers to clean and enhance public spaces. Through the combination of adding beautification measures and art in public spaces along with the removal of litter and debris, this effort will enhance communities and improve spaces for walking and recreation.

Applicants must be local or regional public agencies, transit agencies, or tribal governments. Nonprofit organizations may be sub-applicants.

Project Types 

Eligible projects shall include, but not be limited to:

  • Community litter abatement and beautification
  • Community litter abatement events and/or educational program

Funding

The grant program guidelines are a framework that recognizes the diverse funding needs of potential applicants throughout the state.

  • The local match component will range from 0% to 50% of the project costs.
  • Half of the overall program funds will benefit or be located in underserved communities.
  • The maximum grant is $5 million

Project Selection Criteria

Caltrans will develop project selection criteria that will incorporate:

  • Community need
  • Potential to enhance and beautify public space
  • Potential for greening to provide shade, reduce the urban heat island effect, and use native drought-tolerant plants
  • Potential to improve access to public space
  • Public engagement in the project proposal that reflects community priorities
  • Benefit to underserved communities

These funds shall not be used to displace people experiencing homelessness. Projects must be completed by June 30, 2024.
