Topolonet was funded in 2017 to provide a solution to one of the unsolved problems in power grids in identifying and maintaining accurate topology in real time. Our proprietary algorithm will simultaneously provide accurate real-time topology identification and state estimation from the Phasor Measurement Units (PMU) data and effectively solve the aforementioned problems.
Knowing the accurate grid topology is crucial in many aspects of grid maintenance and management particularly in state estimation and power flow management. Currently, utility companies rely on their topology processors that use the telemetry and manually entered information by operators. These data could be unreliable for several reasons including faulty telemetry, change of the characteristics of devices such as transmission lines and transformers over time, cyber-attacks that change the topology information for malicious purposes and catastrophic events such as high winds, earthquakes, etc. When grid topology is unreliable, state estimation software would provide incorrect state of the grid that can lead to incorrect power flow decisions and eventually catastrophic events. For example, the cause of the Northeastern blackout of 2003 was overloaded transmission lines dropped into foliage that changed the topology of the system and resulted in estimated $6 billion damage and at least 11 deaths.
