Carbon Blade is a climate technology start-up that has developed a more cost efficient direct air capture (DAC) carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technology.
Compared to most engineered DAC systems that require large fans to move substantial volumes of air over the absorption surface and using high temperature and pressure to strip CO2, the Carbon Blade air contactor has a unique blade design that utilizes natural wind conditions to move air over the contactor without the incorporation of energy-intensive fans. After the CO2 is released, through an electrochemical process, the carbon capture solvent is regenerated with an electrodialysis bipolar membrane (EDBM) using a modest electrical current to separate cations and anions out of solution. This creates a self perpetuations closed loop system that uses electricity as the only input and CO2 as the only output.
The resulting low power demands of the Carbon Blade technology is met using a combination of wind and solar combined with battery energy storage. The entire system hosted in a compact containerized solution that facilitates flexible deployment and can be placed directly at carbon sequestration sites without requiring costly CO2 pipelines or electric power lines.
