muGrid Analytics stands at the forefront of tackling the most challenging intersections of energy and economics. Specializing in renewable energy, energy storage, and microgrid systems, muGrid delivers unparalleled, data-driven advisory and design services that seamlessly integrate technology and finance. With its proprietary Redcloud energy optimization platform, muGrid ensures that clients achieve their energy resilience and sustainability goals at the lowest possible lifecycle cost by offering bespoke solutions tailored to each client's unique needs. Founded by Dr. Travis Simpkins, who pioneered advanced microgrid modeling at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and led by Amy Simpkins, an accomplished expert in complex systems and innovation, muGrid excels in providing independent, technology-agnostic analysis. The firm’s core values—integrity, curiosity, agility, and collaboration—drive its commitment to delivering accurate, actionable insights and fostering strong, collaborative partnerships across the energy sector.
Sitting at the intersection of technology and finance, muGrid is uniquely positioned to not only help sites and technology partners understand how distributed energy technologies work, but also how they will make or save money. muGrid has developed the proprietary Redcloud energy optimization platform, which is used to optimize energy generation and consumption at buildings, campuses, feeders, networks, and bases such that clients meet their energy resilience and sustainability goals at minimum life cycle cost. Moreover, muGrid operates multiple battery energy storage systems in the field. We flow this operational expertise back into our feasibility studies to design better, and more cost-effective systems for our clients.
The Redcloud ecosystem comprises two sister tools: Redcloud Planning and Redcloud Energy Management System (EMS). We use Redcloud Planning to perform historical-looking mathematical optimization to right-size systems, develop optimal operational strategies across multiple stacked revenue streams, and build the business case for projects. This internal tool was created by Dr. Travis Simpkins, the same creator of NREL’s REopt platform, and thus has been validated against it. Because we own the source code to Redcloud, we can freely modify it to best fit the characteristics of the site, the rate tariff, or objectives of the microgrid design.
Redcloud EMS is a microgrid control platform built on the same foundation of mathematical optimization as Redcloud Planning, but uses predictive analytics and machine learning to make dispatch decisions during real-time operations, enabling the system to realize the economic benefits that were estimated during the planning and design phases. The US Department of Energy has recognized the unique economic and resilience capabilities of Redcloud EMS and has funded its development through the Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) program. Redcloud EMS is currently commercially operating at four microgrids across the US with more deployments in the pipeline to commission in 2026 and beyond.
muGrid has conducted economic and resilience feasibility analysis and microgrid design studies for distributed energy resources and microgrids at hundreds of public and private sites across the US, Native nations, and around the world.
