In the initial round, the U.S. Department of Energy invested $3.46 billion in GRIP, supporting 58 projects across 44 states. Notably, 16 projects received Grid Resilience Utility and Industry Grants.

Funding Mechanisms:

  1. Grid Resilience Utility and Industry Grants ($2.5 billion): Modernizing the electric grid to mitigate impacts of extreme weather and natural disasters, addressing hazards such as wildfires, floods, hurricanes, and more.

  2. Smart Grid Grants ($3 billion): Enhancing flexibility, efficiency, and reliability, with a focus on increasing transmission system capacity, preventing faults, integrating renewable energy, and supporting electrified vehicles and buildings.

  3. Grid Innovation Program ($5 billion): Providing financial assistance to states, Tribes, local governments, and utility commissions for collaborative projects using innovative approaches to enhance grid resilience and reliability. Project applications may include interregional transmission, clean energy generation interconnection, and creative use of distribution grid assets.
