Grant Description:
The Responsible Design, Development, and Deployment of Technologies (ReDDDoT) program invites collaborative and transdisciplinary proposals that explore and demonstrate the principles, methodologies, implementations, and impacts associated with the responsible design, development, and deployment of technologies. This program is a joint initiative between NSF and philanthropic funders including Ford Foundation, The Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, Pivotal Ventures, The Eric and Wendy Schmidt Fund for Strategic Innovation, and Siegel Family Endowment. Emphasizing collaboration across disciplines and sectors, such as academia, industry, and non-profits, the program seeks to embed ethical, legal, and societal considerations and community values throughout technology lifecycles.
The ReDDDoT program aims to:
1. Stimulate research, innovation, and capacity building in responsible technology design, development, and deployment.
2. Foster inclusive communities of interest bringing together key stakeholders to inform best practices in technology processes.
3. Educate and train the STEM workforce on approaches to responsible technology practices.
4. Accelerate pathways to societal and economic benefits while mitigating potential harms.
5. Empower communities, including economically disadvantaged and marginalized populations, to participate in all stages of technology development.
In FY 2024, the program offers a Planning Grant phase for collaborative activities, Translational Research Coordination Networks to initiate a relevant community of practice, and Workshop proposals to raise awareness and identify approaches in technology areas. The Phase 2 allows for Project proposals focusing on priority technology areas: artificial intelligence, biotechnology, or natural and anthropogenic disaster prevention or mitigation, including climate change and environmental sustainability. Proposals covering multiple priority areas or additional technology domains are encouraged.
The ReDDDoT program aligns with Section 10387 of the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022 and emphasizes transdisciplinary collaborations that ensure the responsible design, development, and deployment of technologies to benefit public well-being and minimize harm.
