Early-stage clean energy entrepreneurs face challenges in accessing testing and validation facilities as they attempt to progress from prototype to pilot and demonstration scale.
The CalTestBed Initiative is a voucher program that will assist clean energy entrepreneurs in gaining access to critical testing facilities and endeavours to expedite their pathway to commercialization through building a strong network with connections to companies and investors.
CalTestBed accelerates entrepreneurs by awarding vouchers worth up to $300,000 to test and validate technologies at one of nearly 30 testbeds across the UC system and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. By streamlining access to these facilities, CalTestBed will assist entrepreneurs in refining their technology prototypes to better meet customer specifications while accelerating some of California’s most promising clean energy technologies on the pathway to successful commercialization.
CalTestBed will fund hardware and integrated solutions. A qualifying integrated solution must feature a piece of hardware that works in conjunction with a software program
to deliver the technology’s benefits. An existing prototype ready for laboratory-grade testing is required. Innovations selected for a voucher must benefit California’s electricity grid through increasing reliability, lowering costs, or improving safety.
Please find information about the process, schedule and guidance in the Application Manual.
The California Test Bed Initiative—CalTestBed—is a laboratory voucher and commercialization development program for innovators and entrepreneurs working to bring early to mid-stage clean energy concepts to market. It is made possible by an $11 million grant from the California Energy Commission.
