What is CMS?

Compact Membrane Systems (CMS) pioneer membrane systems for decarbonization. CMS OptipermTM is a bolt-on, modular solution that can be deployed in existing facilities to expand capacity, deliver new sources of revenue, reduce losses and capture GHG emissions. Used in petchem, refining, RNG/biogas, carbon capture, and pharma.

How we create value

Modular, bolt-on systems capture value from existing infrastructure that producers can’t unlock, capture, and monetize. OptipermTM olefins targets olefin separation for splitter, reactor, or process capacity expansion, debottlenecking, and topline growth.  OptipermTM biogas upgrades streams with fewer steps, compression, and cost than alternatives.  OptipermTM carbon is a low cost modular approach to COcapture from flue gas streams (1-50% CO2)

The Problem

Chemical separations in extreme environments are difficult, costly, and often reliant on decades-old solutions. Membrane solutions offer a cost-effective modification to large fixed infrastructure and address bottlenecks, waste streams, and GHG emissions.

Our solution

Using patented perfluoropolymer technology, CMS delivers membrane-based chemical separations that can withstand the challenge of industrial separations in a scalable, bolt-on, modular, and financially attractive way.

Applications

Olefins separation is an annual market opportunity > $3 BN in the near term, with applications for bolt-on systems to splitters, reactor purge streams, alkylation, specialty chemical processes, and eventually greenfield installations.  Customer applications show strong economic results (IRR>75%) for a first generation CMS system, reflecting high unmet need.

OptipermTM olefins pilot systems have been deployed at the DCRC refinery and are upcoming at Dow and Braskem facilities.

OptipermTM biogas has been piloted on a farm digester and is targeting larger pilots in 2022. OptipermTM carbon is at lab scale, seeking pilot opportunities

Business model

Initial olefins application systems range from
$2-$40M, with recurring revenue generated from membrane replacements. Biogas applications are smaller with less frequent replacements.

CMS partners with industry leading organizations to effectively reach end users and pursue growth in high-value markets. We directly sell membrane systems developed and manufactured in our US-based facilities and work with contract manufacturers to produce at scale.

Competition

CMS offers superior performance, economics, ease of use and sizing over other membrane and non-membrane solutions. CMS solutions replace and/or enhance incumbent and traditional technologies (e.g. distillation), unlocking new opportunities that were previously unachievable or uneconomical. For carbon capture, OptipermTM is a low cost option, effective across a range of concentrations and conditions.
