Company Overview:
Founded in 2018, and headquartered in Rockville, MD, Liatris Inc. is developing advanced materials for thermal insulation using patented nanopore foaming technology. Through our DOE and NSF-funded work, we have developed the first non-combustible building insulation board (ASTM E136 / NFPA 285), as well as a higher efficiency aerogel composite insulation for use in mid-high rise building markets. We have achieved significant validation through raising >$7M in additional corporate, government and investor funding since founding. We are currently scaling and commercializing the products below with a large building products manufacturer through a JDA.
Technology:
Gen 1: Non-combustible building insulation (up to R-5 / inch) which addresses pressing market needs and regulatory / code changes as a board-based mineral wool alternative; this has been demonstrated at 1 sq ft using a foamed cement composite board (R-4.8 / inch without aerogels).
Gen 2: High R-value building insulation (>R-8 / inch commercialization target) which provides 1.5-2x the performance of today’s foam insulation products at competitive cost / R; this has been demonstrated at 1 sq ft scale on an aerogel fiber composite “mat” design.
Team:
Liatris has a lean but experienced team led by domain experts who have cradle-to-grave product development experience taking insulation technologies from concept to large scale production. Our CEO, Frank Yang, has been a pioneer in leveraging corporate partnerships to scale up clean energy technologies, including forming a solar panel manufacturing partnership between Stion and Taiwan Semiconductor ($50B) in 2010. Our technical team, led by 30+ year industry veterans Arthur Yang and Lida Lu, has 6 Ph.D.’s and 1 M.S.
Frank Yang, Co-Founder and CEO – Frank has 15+ years’ experience bringing new materials to market as a founder at Stion and Liatris, as well as helping lead DOE-related technology scaling activities such as the ABC Collaborative and American Made Challenges as a Partner at the venture consulting firm ADL Ventures.
Dr. Arthur Jing-Min Yang, Founder & CTO - Dr. Yang is the full-time CTO of Liatris and founded ISTN (from which Liatris licensed its technology) in 1997. He served as Director of Insulation Research for Armstrong (later Armacell), managing a 15+ person team.
