Organization Overview

Self-Help Enterprises (SHE) is a nationally recognized housing and community development

organization whose mission is to work together with low-income families to build and sustain healthy

homes and communities. The pioneer and leading provider of mutual self-help housing in the United

States, SHE’s efforts today encompass a range of endeavors to build better homes and communities for

farmworkers and other hard-working families. Since 1965, SHE has provided more than 18,000

individuals with housing counseling services, helped 6,600 families to build their own homes,

rehabilitated over 7,000 unsafe homes, developed over 3,000 units of affordable rental housing,

constructed or replaced 945 water wells, and provided technical assistance for reliable access to safe

drinking water and sanitary sewer infrastructure to over 36,000 individuals in 175 small communities.

SHE’s commitment to providing resources and training for individuals builds the capacity of highly

effective leaders in communities that also promote collaborative solutions for improving communities.

These combined efforts have touched the lives of over 75,000 families, providing security and stability

for families and building more productive communities.

Please describe in your own words your community's needs:
Many rural communities in the San Joaquin Valley lack sanitary sewer systems, dependable water sources, or clean energy infrastructure. Low-income families and farmworkers -- our target population -- often face challenges securing these critical resources many of us take for granted. Self-Help Enterprises (SHE) addresses water and energy issues through a multi-faceted approach including providing emergency water solutions like well repair and tank delivery, assisting communities with safe drinking water projects, and promoting sustainable energy in homes and communities. We offer technical assistance for community water planning, help with home repairs for energy efficiency, and connect disadvantaged communities to resources for clean and affordable energy and transportation. SHE also develops energy-efficient affordable housing and implements projects to transition homes to all-electric, lower-cost energy sources.
