Driving deep energy efficiency measures in a San Francisco Whole Foods store.
Project Description
Working with Whole Foods, Arup, Berkeley Lab, and a host of partners, we secured a major Energy Commission grant to drive deep efficiency measures in a San Francisco Whole Foods store. Supermarkets and grocery stores have among the highest energy use index amongst commercial buildings, and therefore are among the most challenging cases to achieve zero net energy. We developed cost-effective energy upgrade packages including pre-commercial technologies such as advanced refrigerants, phase change materials, occupancy sensing measures, gas-to-electric conversion, and advanced controls. The result was a landmark efficiency effort that sets a blueprint for future stores.
